Animal
"As an archetype, the animal stands for the lowest instinctive levels
of the subconscious. Animals are symbols of both physical and spiritual
cosmic powers. The signs of the Zodiac, as typifying cosmic energy, are
examples of this. Ancient Egyptian gods were depicted with the heads of
animals, and the four Evangelists are symbolized by them, while the Holy
Spirit is given the form of a dove.
Animals,
so frequently recurrent in dreams and works of art, embody partial identifications
with man, aspects, images of his complex nature, mirrors of his secret
motivations and of subjugated or uncontrolled instincts. Each corresponds
to a part of our selves, either integrated of to be integrated into a
single harmonious personality."
